samsung x news 2018

The latest news and rumours about Samsung's Galaxy X foldable smartphone :

The Samsung Galaxy X is a strange one. Its existence is still something of a mystery - we know it's definitely a thing (we've seen the concepts) and we know that it bends. The thing is, we don't know how it achieves this technical wizardry, or know any concrete details surrounding Samsung's fancy-pants smartphone for that matter.
Industry leaders might have a better idea about the Galaxy X, following reports of a private Samsung event at CES 2018. According to The Korean Herald, the secret meeting involved a new version of the Galaxy X, as well as a launch schedule for the device.
The site claims Samsung unveiled both inward folding and outward folding phones during the meeting, with the former expected to be adopted first by Samsung.  The latter is described, however, as a “more advanced next-generation technology”.
The report also says the Galaxy X has a 7.3-inch display, but no specific details are given about a launch date.
In the meantime, Let's Go Digital has unearthed a creative offshoot of the unusual foldable phone, namely this wraparound phone.
Somewhat less revolutionary than its anticipated foldable counterpart, this design patent shows a handset whose front display is used in the conventional way, with one side of the screen reaching 180 degrees around the back, extending into half of the phone's back panel.
It's an interesting update to Samsung's universally admired curved edge screen, but just how useful is it? And could it really be a viable offshoot of the foldable screen that's been in the pipeline for a while now? Only time will tell.
Read on to find out absolutely everything you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy X, including UK release date, UK price, specs and noteworthy features.

Samsung Galaxy X: Everything you need to know :

  • Samsung Galaxy X slated for 2018 release
  • Limited 100,000 units at launch
  • Possibly a smartphone/tablet hybrid
Samsung has been teasing us with a foldable mobile for some time. In spite of this hype, the likelihood of Samsung planning a triple hit following the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note 8 reveals earlier this year was always very low.
Now, our initial hope - although fleeting - was that the Galaxy X would get a mention during the Note 8 unveiling back in August 2017, but alas, there wasn't even the faintest of whiffs.
Following that, IFA Berlin was cited as the next big tech event where we could see Samsung’s elusive foldable. Reports pointed at a grand unveiling at the annual tech conference but again, there was no such mention. The Galaxy X was reportedly shown to industry leaders at CES 2018, but no sign of it in public.

Samsung Galaxy X UK release date: When does it come out? :

  • Reports suggest Q2 2018 reveal
  • Initially limited to 100,000 units
  • 2018 release
Given the unique stature of Samsung’s rumoured foldable, current speculation is that the company will only release a limited run of 100,000 devices seems valid. So, who’s going to nab one? According to SamMobile, the device will release in selected regions first to test interest prior to a wider push. Listing nine territories in total, the Samsung Galaxy X will reportedly hit the UK and US, as well as Poland and Samsung’s home of South Korea.
This could signal exclusivity with selected networks, akin to Apple’s O2 deal for the original iPhone. This is speculative at the moment, but Samsung did opt for this model last year with the Galaxy S7 Active, naming AT&T as sole US carrier. After all,100,000 units isn’t much for a brand used to owning roughly 40% of the smartphone market.
The latest news suggests the Galaxy X will launch in 2018. The new details come straight from the horse's mouth itself, with Samsung's own Koh Dong-Jin speaking to journalists on 12 September 2017. According to Bloomberg, the president of mobile business discussed the Galaxy X, and its 2018 release date: "As the head of the business, I can say our current goal is next year," he said, continuing: "When we can overcome some problems for sure, we will launch the product." Here's hoping that 2018 release doesn't get pushed back.

Samsung Galaxy X specs: What's inside? :

Details on what specs the Samsung Galaxy X will bolster remains very hush hush but those “close to the matter” are trickling out the odd bit of info via the Korea Herald. One outlandish claim in this report predicts the Samsung Galaxy X will feature a 4K resolution screen, certainly making it quite a showstopper. However, 4K seems ambitious for something utilising what is very new technology.
More plausible than 4K, the Galaxy X could bolster a Samsung prototype shown at SID Display Week 2016. A video filmed by SlashGear reveals a 5.7in, 1080p OLED display on an automated arm control, with a pixel density of 386ppi. Considering this was just last year, it does seem odd Samsung would not incorporate into a future product.
In terms of design, one of the crucial elements in various patent images is the hinge that would allow Samsung’s device to function as a foldable. In July 2016, Patently Mobilereleased a series of images for both a mobile and tablet concept showing how foldable tech would work. One Galaxy X design demonstrates a central fold in the middle of the screen, allowing the device to go into a compact mode. In November 2016, SamMobile released new patent images showing what is assumed to be the Samsung Galaxy X in much more detail. They give an even more in-depth view of the centrefold technology. However, these images didn’t seem to indicate a tablet hybrid (at least in this model).
